MD Anderson employees come into contact with cancer patients on a daily basis, but they may rarely think about themselves in the patient role. That’s what Linette Leadon thought when she was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer.
A director in Environmental Healthy and Safety, Leadon had worked at MD Anderson for nearly 12 years when she got her diagnosis in 2014. And even though she was surrounded by other cancer patients, she felt alone. That was until she met Jamie Bernard, a recruiter in HR, through MD Anderson’s speed mentoring program. Bernard was being treated for lymphedema and was willing to talk Leadon about her cancer journey. Bernard then told her about the Cancer in the Workplace Employee Network.
The network supports employees who are also patients. It recognizes that there are specific struggles associated with holding a job and dealing with the stress of cancer treatment. And the network’s goal is to provide those employees with a network of support and resources so they can continue their professional and academic growth.
Leadon says, to her, the most important part of the network has been meeting other people at MD Anderson who have faced similar challenges.
